An East Boston resident was welcomed Monday night at Red Sky in Boston as one of the newest members of ONEin3 Boston’s Advisory Council.

Elizabeth Tanefis joined Mayor Thomas Menino, and current and former members at the gala to celebrate five years of successful service that ONEin3 has provided to the city. Menino established the ONEin3 in 2004 to give the one-third of Boston’s population that’s between the ages of 20 and 34 a direct line of communication straight to the ears of City Hall.

Tanefis and other members will advise the mayor on key areas of concern for this constituency and act as ambassadors to the larger 20-34-year-old community.  Through the years, more than 100 Bostonians citywide have become involved through the council. “Our young adult population is the driving force behind Boston’s economy and creative vitality.  My ONEin3 Boston Advisory Council is an amazing representation of that energy,” said Menino.  “I can’t thank the members enough for the fresh ideas that they discuss with me and their enthusiasm for improving the lives of Boston’s 20-34-year-old population.  I’m excited to reunite with past members and welcome the newly chosen group.”

Tanefis is one of 18 new members, each of whom will serve a two-year term.  More than 100 applications were received this year, the largest response ONEin3 has seen since the council’s inception. Each year, the subcommittees devise plans of action and policy recommendations in service of ONEin3 Boston’s mission to help ONEin3ers find and create jobs, navigate the housing market, connect with their neighborhoods, and invest in the city’s civic life. Originally established with four subcommittees centered on topics of special interest to this demographic - Young Families, Housing, Civic Engagement, and Social and Cultural Life - this year, the council grew to include a fifth, Jobs and Careers.

In the last five years, all of these subcommittees have made a significant impact on their respective target areas. For more information on the work of the subcommittees or to sign up for the ONEin3 Boston e-newsletter, please e-mail ONEin3 Boston Manager Devin Cole at devin.cole.bra@cityofboston.gov.
