A gas leak caused a bit of pandemonium in Brandywine Village last week, which forced the evacuation of dozens of residents from the housing complex and the closure of several East Boston streets in Orient Heights.
The call came into the Boston Fire Department last Thursday at 11:30 a.m. A construction truck, with workers digging at the intersection of Brandywine Drive and Trustman Terrace, hit a 2-inch gas line that caused the leak. There are several ongoing construction projects in the Brandywine area.
The Boston Fire Department immediately responded and evacuated 50 residents from one 10-unit building inside Brandywine.
It took about an hour for the gas company to find the main valve and shut down the leak. No injuries were reported and firefighters were able to safely ventilate the affected building.
“This does happen from time to time,” said Steve MacDonald of the Boston Fire Department. “Gas is extremely dangerous and we never take any chances when there’s a potential leak in a residential neighborhood.”
According to reports, the leak has been fixed and there’s no danger of another leak.
