John “Jack” McCormick

Born hard worker who took pride in every job

John “Jack” McCormick of East Boston passed away in peace. He was surrounded by his loved ones after spending his last days in the place he loved most, Rock Haven Lake in Maine, at the celebrated age of 90 years old.

Jack was the loving son of the late James and Mary (Southwell) McCormick of Newfoundland and was one of eleven siblings. Raised in Everett, Jack was born a hard worker and took pride in every job to which he committed his time.

Jack was a truck driver with the Local 25 Teamsters for over 40 years and fondly remembers his time making his nightly route from Boston to New York. From there, Jack continued his career as the proprietor of the Low Bridge Diner in Everett. He then enjoyed the last years of his professional life working for the Archdiocese of Boston at the Sacred Heart Church and school in Lynn for over 10 years, before retiring at the age of 70.

Retirement didn’t mean an end to his work. Jack’s children playfully joke that their father would break things just to fix them. It was rare to find Jack without a tool in his hand or the idea for a project in his mind.

The happiest years of his life were spent with his wife Leila “Louise” McCormick of 33 years at their home in East Boston, and at their cottage in Maine. The couple would spend their days together on the boat, enjoying the lake, and playing competitive games of cribbage with their family.

Jack is survived by his loving wife, Leila, his children, Carol and Robert Harper of Everett, Jackie Mattucchio of North Andover, John and Bodia McCormick of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Jimmy McCormick of North Andover, and the late Elizabeth and her surviving husband, Steve Lind. He is also survived by his step-children Linda and Jerry LaCasse of Somers, CT, Laura and Robert Porzio of Wakefield, Lana and Paul Calvi of Hingham, Louise and Donald Gabor of Medfield and Lorraine and Robert Bucchino of Revere. Jack was the brother of the late Mary Frye, James, Frank, Gerald, Paul, Donald, Jim, Pauline Fritz, Geraldine Doherty and Dorothy Hughes.  He will live in the memories of his 21 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who will remember their “Da” and “Grandpa John”, and “Uncle Jack” forever telling them stories, singing limericks, and doling out projects for them to complete.

His Funeral was held from the Murphy O’Hara Funeral Home, 519 Broadway, Everett followed by a Funeral Mass in Immaculate Conception Church with Entombment in Holy Cross Mausoleum. Donations may be made in Jack’s name to the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Centerhttps://giving.massgeneral.org/cancer/donate/.
