East Boston Neighborhood Health Center CEO Manny Lopes was elected to Board of Directors of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts last week. Lopes, who also serves on Blue Cross Blue Shield’s foundation, joins Martin Meehan, President of the University of Massachusetts, and Corey E. Thomas, President and CEO of Rapid7, on the board. Lopes and the others replace Helen Drinan, Phil Johnston, and Ralph Martin.

Lopes was named EBNHC President and Chief Executive Officer in 2012 after decades of serving the health center in a range of executive roles. The Eastie native served on the transition committees for Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker. Last year, Lopes was awarded the NAACP President’s Award for his leadership in the health care industry. Under his direction, EBNHC was named to the Boston Globe’s list of Top Places to Work for two years in a row.

“I’m really honored and very excited to become a member of the Board of Directors for the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts,” said Lopes. “Blue Cross has done so much to advance health issues in Massachusetts, and the mission at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center is so closely aligned. I hope that I can provide some real value and look forward to joining others on the Board as we help those who need it most.”

Board Chair Phyllis R. Yale said, “Manny, Marty, and Corey are accomplished leaders with significant experience and expertise that will be invaluable as we advance our mission in a rapidly evolving and highly competitive marketplace. On behalf of the entire Board, as well as the associates of Blue Cross, I also want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Helen, Phil, and Ralph for their many years of board service.”

Speaking to the value that Lopes brings to the board,  Blue Cross President and Chief Executive Officer added, “Manny’s leadership in community health care will deepen our commitment to meeting the needs of all Massachusetts residents.”

Lopes serves on the boards of a number of organizations, including the Boston Public Health Commission, Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers, Boston Medical Center, and the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation. Lopes earned his MBA from Northeastern University’s Graduate School of Business.

Lopes will serve on the Board’s Audit and Health Care Quality and Affordability Committees.
