EBSB Deep Freeze Tournament honors Anthony Albano

The Annual East Boston Savings Bank Deep Freeze Faceoff Against Breast Cancer Tournament was a big success.

The East Boston High School ice hockey team, led by head coach Bob Anthony, defeated Mystic Valley Regional, 4-2, in the semifinals before falling to Salem High, 4-1, in the championship game Saturday at the Porrazzo Rink. Robert Gray Andrew McLaughlin, John Lockhead, and Kenneth Lockhead scored goals in the semifinal game while Steve Tauro made 23 saves. Ryan Tosto scored the Jets’ lone goal in the title game.

The tournament committee decided this year to donate all the proceeds to a scholarship in memory of Anthony Albano, a long-time supporter of EBHS sports, who passed away in October. The Anthony Albano Scholarship will be presented at the EBHS All Sports Banquet in the spring.

The tournament was founded 11 years ago as a tribute to Jacki Anthony’s recovery from cancer. Mrs. Anthony and her daughter, Carrie Anthony Brangiforte, have assisted each year at the tournament. Also helping out is Phil Brangiforte, principal at East Boston High School.

“The tournament was very successful,” said Coach Anthony. “We raised about $3,000 for the Anthony Albano Scholarship. We decided to dedicate the tournament and our season to Anthony Albano. We’re wearing a decal on our helmets with “Albano” on them.”
