Marie Gioiosa

Former resident of East Boston and Winthrop

Word has been received here of the untimely death in Toms River, New Jersey of Marie A. Gioiosa, formerly of East Boston and Winthrop, who died at the Hospice of Toms River, NJ on August 14 following a two year battle with metastatic cancer.

Ms. Gioiosa moved to Toms River, New Jersey more than 20 years ago and up until very recently, she worked for the Lakewood, New Jersey Board of Education as a Teacher’s Aide (Para Professional) for all that time.

A native of East Boston, she was a 1969 graduate of Fitton Catholic High School and an alumna of Bryant-Stratton Business College,Class of 1971. She lived in Winthrop for about 10 years before moving to Toms River, NJ.

She was the beloved mother of: Jonathan Elliott of Lovell, Maine and Lt. Robert Elliott, US Army of Germany; the dear fiancée of John Conway, with whom she made her home; the devoted daughter of the late Daniel and Josephine (Geraci) Gioiosa; the cherished sister of: Charles Gioiosa and his wife, Barbara Brainin of Seattle, Washington, Denise Giangregorio and her husband, Alan of Winthrop, John Gioiosa and his wife, Mary of Malden, Anne Gioiosa and her wife, Linda Stilles of Saugus and the late Anthony Gioiosa. She is also lovingly survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ronald Russo

Union Bricklayer

Ronald Russo of Winthrop, formerly of Orient Heights East Boston. died unexpectedly on August 24.

A Union Bricklayer, he was a member of Local 22 Allied Crafstman Union and one of the Bricklayers of the Rumney Marsh Academy of Revere.

He was the beloved son of Salvatore “Sammy” Russo of Winthrop and the late Patricia A. “Patty” (Sullivan) Russo; loving brother of Thomas R. Russo and his wife, Jodi of Revere, Salvatore J. Russo and his wife, Andrea and Kenneth P. Russo, all of Winthrop and Patricia M. Lio and her husband, Anthony of Westwood; cherished uncle of Philip and Anthony Lio, Thomas J. Russo, Amanda M. Rivera and her husband, Odie, Richard Russo, Amanda C. Di Cicco, Rochelle Marzano and he also leaves his great niece. Zoey Rivera. He was the loving nephew of Marie Papandrea and her husband, Ben, Margaret Selvage and her late husband, Robert and Alice Teneriello and her husband, Sal, Philip Russo, Richard Russo and his wife, Joann and Marie Gulsti, all of Revere, Edward Russo and his wife, Louise of Oklahoma and Josephine DiMinico of Norfolk and also leaves many loving cousins.

Visiting hours will be Thursday from 8 to 11 a.m. at Vazza’s “Beechwood” Funeral Home, 262 Beach Street, Revere followed by his funeral at the Funeral Home at 11 a.m. and a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph-St. Lazarus Church, 59 Ashley St., East Boston at noon.  Entombment will be in the Mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett. Robert ‘Bob’ McDonald

Of Florida, formerly of East Boston

Robert “Bob” McDonald of Beverly Hills, Florida, formerly from the Boston area (including East Boston and Malden) passed away in the care of Hospice staff on August 15. He was 75 years old.

A US Navy veteran, he retired from his job managing administrative services for a Boston law firm before buying a home and moving to Florida approximately seven years ago.  He enjoyed drawing, painting, and spending time with friends and family in his retirement.

He is survived by his former wife, Millie, of East Boston; two daughters, Bonnie of Boston/Natick, and Lori, of Florida; a grandson, Jonathan; two brothers, Kenneth and James; nieces Christine and Ruth Capone and nephews, Jimmy and Michael Capone. He is also survived by other family members and dear friends.

A memorial service may be planned in the future.  In lieu of flowers, his daughter Bonnie, who coordinated his care with the generous help of Hospice professionals, asks that memorial donations be sent to the Hospice of Citrus County/Hospice House, 3350 W. Audubon Park Path, Lecanto, FL, 34461.

Alfonso ‘Al’ Serino

Retired Postal Worker

Alfonso D. “Al” Serino of Salem, formerly of Swampscott and Maverick Street, East Boston passed away at the Shaughnessy Rehab in Salem on August 23 after a long illness.

A Postal Worker for 35 years, he was the beloved husband of Nellie ( Palladino ) Serino with whom he shared 61 years of marriage; loving father of Donna Pelletier and her husband, Bert of Lynn, Karen Pronovost and her husband, Ronald of Haverhill and Susan Morrison and her husband, Kenneth of Tewksbury; dear brother of the late Ralph, Anthony and Joseph Serino and cherished grandfather of Jaclyn, Jenna, Lauren, Leah, Matthew and Brian.

Funeral arrangements were by Vazza’s “Beechwood” Funeral Home, Revere.  Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.
