Eastie Soccer Athlete-poetry Scholars off to New York

Two East Boston Elementary Students are going to New York City to represent America SCORES Boston at the 7th Annual America SCORES National Poetry Slam on April 8th 2013.

Diana G. from the Patrick J Kennedy School and Geovanni S. from the Donald McKay K-8 School will represent the city of Boston at the poetry event taking place at the New York Stock Exchange.

They will be working over the next few months to prepare for this three day all expenses paid trip and performance opportunity.  On April 6 they will travel to New York and meet up with students from 13 other cities, each selected from a pool of 8,000 students served by America SCORES across the country.

America SCORES is a nationally recognized after school program that promotes academic and athletic excellence through soccer, creative writing and community service.  Each team meets with Boston Public School teachers after school for an hour and a half.

These teachers coach teams of 15 students to perform poetry, play soccer and plan community service projects. The America SCORES Boston serves 12 Boston Public elementary schools and 10 Boston Public middle schools and maintains an alumni leadership academy for high school students to stay involved with the program.

This year the evening will be a celebration of the achievements of our poet-athletes nationwide.  Students will perform at the Stock Exchange in front of hundreds of people.  The guest of honor will be New York Sports Hall of Famer, Shep Messing and with special guest, John Harkes.
