Red Sox and Wally Help in Annual Toys for Tickets

The Boston Red Sox and Wally the Green Monster lent a helping hand to the City of Boston’s annual Toys for Tickets campaign, doing their part to put smiles on the faces of local children – and Boston drivers – this holiday season.

Wally the Green Monster reported to work at the parking ticket payment windows at the Office of the Parking Clerk in Boston City Hall this morning.  Boston drivers who came to pay a parking ticket in person received a gift from the Red Sox organization; for each driver, the team covered the payment of one non-public safety related parking ticket by donating a toy to the City’s Toys for Tickets campaign.

“We are thrilled to have the Red Sox involved with our Toys for Tickets campaign this year,” said Boston Transportation Department Commissioner Thomas J. Tinlin.  “The toys that the Team has donated will go a long way toward helping local families who are struggling financially this holiday season.”

Toys for Tickets began in 1993 and has been embraced by local drivers who appreciate the opportunity to pay off a parking ticket by contributing to a worthy charity. Often, drivers choose to donate a toy that is valued in excess of the original ticket amount when participating in the Campaign.  In 2011, 119 parking tickets were resolved with non-violent toys that valued approximately $3,800.

BTD also announced today that the City is extending the Toys for Tickets Campaign through the end of the day on Tuesday, December 11, 2012.  Any driver issued a non-public safety parking ticket on Boston’s streets between Thursday, November 29 and Saturday, December 1, may resolve their ticket by providing a non-violent, unwrapped toy of equal or greater value than the ticket fine.  Drivers who would like to participate must bring the parking ticket as well as a receipt for the toy.

Toys and tickets will be collected through Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at three different locations.

1)  Weekdays, between the hours of 9 AM and 4 PM., in front of the Office of the Parking Clerk on the second floor of Boston City Hall.

2)  Weekdays, between the hours of 7 AM to 11 PM, and Saturdays, between the hours of 8 AM and 1 PM, at the BTD Tow Lot, 200 Frontage Road.

3)  At the BTD Mobile Command Center, from 10 AM to 2 PM, on Saturday, December 8 at the Samuel Adams Statue on Faneuil Hall Plaza.

Public safety violations that are excluded from the Toys for Tickets campaign are: HP Ramp, HP-DV Parking Only, Fire Hydrant, Crosswalk, Double Parking, Fire Lane, Less Than 20 Feet From An intersection, No Stopping/Standing
