Cheerleaders Excel at UCA Camps

The textbooks are closed, the homework is done, and the classes are over, but the East Boston High School Cheerleaders are still hard at work. For the fifth consecutive summer the EBHS cheer team enhanced their cheer skills and leadership qualities at one of the Universal Cheerleading Association camps.

For four days the girls endured extreme heat, physical exhaustion, and mental fatigue at the College of Holy Cross in Worcester. Somehow the team prevailed and not only did they leave camp with 1st place in the Camp Championship cheer division and second place in the Camp Championship dance division, but they also received the leadership award for the fourth consecutive summer. Also during camp, captains Nicolette D’Andrea and Keila Giuliano were honored with All-American medallions after a very intense tryout process. Veteran cheerleaders Nicolette D’Andrea, Gina Ciampa, and Keila Giuliano were also awarded pins for their outstanding leadership qualities among 200+ cheerleaders from Massachusetts and Connecticut. Newcomers Danielle DiPerri, Danielle Elliott, and Briana D’Amelio also helped the team shine through their hard work and endless effort.

As a team the girls have many things to be proud of from their four days with UCA. However, their biggest accomplishment is the commitment they made to helping Varsity, the parent company of UCA, raise awareness about St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

This summer Varsity requested that each cheerleader who attended camp submit five donation request letters to support St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. The EBHS cheer team went above-and-beyond and made a team goal of submitting over 200 letters. The Jets cheer team submitted more letters at The College of Holy Cross camp than any other team, yet they were the smallest group in attendance with only six participants.

Helping to raise awareness about St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital is only the beginning of what the EBHS cheerleaders plan to do for their community this coming school year. They also plan to raise awareness about ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and diabetes.

If you have any questions regarding the cheer team or would like to become a member please contact head coach Vanessa Giovanniello at [email protected]  or join us at the East Boston Stadium on Thursday August 18th at 5pm for cheer tryouts.
